THE ANSWER FOR PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer continues to be the second leading cause of cancer death in men (lung cancer being number one), and it is estimated that one out of 11 men eventually will develop prostate cancer. But what nobody seems to be telling men is that this is not a death sentence. There are things you can do to keep your prostate healthy. In this special report I'll discuss some natural therapies that are proving to be powerful weapons against prostate cancer.

Until recently, tomatoes and citrus fruits were just items on a grocery list or ingredients in a recipe. New research has increased the clout of these simple plants, and I have a feeling that men will be looking at them in a whole new light. They might even call them their prostate's best friends!

TOMATOES DID THE TRICK

Recently, the results of a four-year study involving 47,894 male health workers were released. Records of food intake were kept for each individual. At the beginning of the study, none of the participants had prostate cancer, but by the end of the study, 773 had developed the disease. Individuals who ate more tomatoes, tomato sauce, and pizza had lower rates of prostate cancer. (For some reason, tomato juice was not as protective as either tomatoes or tomato sauce.) Men who ate at least 10 servings of these tomato-based foods per week were 45 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. Men eating four to seven servings were 20 percent less likely.

Interestingly, these results support the fact that people of Mediterranean ancestry, who have one of the highest consumption rates of tomato sauce, also have the lowest rate of prostate cancer. Men of African-American descent, who consume the lowest amounts of tomato sauce, have the highest rate of prostate cancer. Out of the 46 different fruits and vegetables in the study, only strawberries and tomatoes showed any effectiveness in decreasing prostate cancer.

Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, which appears to be the protective factor. Lycopene is the pigment that gives tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, and guavas their red color. It is a fat-soluble antioxidant and a relative of beta carotene. However, it has roughly twice the power of beta carotene and 10 times the strength of vitamin E when it comes to neutralizing free radicals.

Cooking the tomatoes or sauce seems to make it more effective and easier to absorb, which explains why increased rates of pizza consumption showed a positive benefit. Keep in mind, however, that if the pizza is loaded with fatty toppings, the potential dangers to your heart and cardiovascular system can outweigh any possible benefits to your prostate.

GRAPEFRUIT CAN STOP THE SPREAD OF PROSTATE CANCER

Many prostate cancers are very slow growing and won't result in death, but fast-growing tumors can be very aggressive and will often metastasize to distant parts of the body within a matter of weeks-almost half of all prostate cancers metastasize to bone. Any time a cancer metastasizes, it becomes far more difficult to treat.

Tumors spread or metastasize by three basic methods:

  • They can spread into other tissues by simply growing and branching into the surrounding tissue.
  • They can spread through the lymph system, resulting m new tumor growth in local and distant lymph nodes.
  • Tumor cells can detach and enter the bloodstream where they can spread throughout the body and, like "seeds," form new tumor growth. Once in the bloodstream, these seeds can invade any organ in the body.

The prognosis of patients with metastasized prostate tumors is less promising than that of patients whose tumor has remained confined to the gland. With current conventional medical therapy, metastasized prostate cancer is considered incurable; therefore, keeping a prostate tumor from spreading could mean the difference between life and death.

Researchers at Wayne State University School of Medicine have released information that may help save the lives of many prostate cancer patients who would otherwise die from metastases. Dr. Kenneth Pienta and his colleagues have discovered that when "modified" citrus pectin is given orally to laboratory animals, it can help stop the metastasis of prostate tumors.

While the effects of modified citrus pectin are somewhat complicated, they were more pronounced with larger doses. (The pectin, however, did nothing to prevent the growth or formation of the primary tumor, regardless of the amount given.) Although the results of this study are encouraging, human studies need to confirm Dr. Pienta's work. Still, since modified citrus pectin has no ill effects, I wouldn't hesitate to use it now, especially if I was faced with an aggressive prostate tumor.

Citrus pectin is basically a fiber that provides the framework for fruits like oranges and grapefruits. For the most part, the body's digestive enzymes have a very difficult time breaking down pectin. Once it reaches the large intestine, however, certain bacterial enzymes are able to split it into smaller fragments. Research at the University of Florida has shown that in its transformed state, it can help lower cholesterol levels and actually reverse heart and artery disease.

Modified citrus pectin is a totally different product from the one being used to treat heart and artery disease. In their prostate study, Dr. Pienta and his colleagues used an acid process to breakdown normal citrus pectin into smaller pieces. This "modified" pectin is small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, it binds to tumor cells and interferes with their ability to form metastases.

Modified citrus pectin has only recently become available. Since there are only a few suppliers of this product, they have very little competition. This tends to keep the price somewhat inflated. As more producers enter the marketplace, I suspect the price will drop dramatically--but then we'll also have to watch for a flood of inferior products.

Currently, you can obtain modified citrus pectin from Klabin Marketing, 2067 Broadway, Suite 700, New York, NY 10023 at 800-933-9440. The recommended adult dosage is 10-15 grams a day, which is about one teaspoon taken two or three times daily. If you mention that you're a subscriber to Alternatives, Klabin Marketing will give you a discounted price.

MORE GOOD NEWS

Based on the latest research findings, anyone who has prostate problems should learn to love garlic as much as I do, especially aged garlic. As garlic ages, a unique sulfur compound is formed called S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC). Researchers at Memorial Sloan, Kettering Cancer Center in New York have just reported that SAMC can slow the progression of prostate cancer.

SAMC does this through a couple of different mechanisms. It speeds up the breakdown of the male hormone testosterone, which is known to encourage the growth of prostate cancer. (This explains why castration has become one of the accepted methods of trying to curtail the disease.) SAMC also decreases the production of certain proteins, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which Promotes cancer cell growth.

Even if you eat garlic regularly, I recommend also taking it in supplement form. Be careful not to waste your money on garlic oil capsules, however, because most are 99 percent vegetable oil with just a touch of garlic. By far the best garlic supplements I've found come from Wakunaga of America. Their aged garlic (also called SGP or Pro Formula 1000) is available in larger health food stores, or through the mail from Wakunaga, 23501 Madero, Mission Viejo, CA 92691, 800-421-2998.

You can find liquid and powdered garlic extracts in practically every health food store in the country. What may be harder to find is a doctor who will be familiar with this latest research and open enough to recommend these products. The important thing is that you now know how effective they can be, regardless of whether your doctor recommends them or not.
