You may be taking the wrong multivitamin You and I have two very important things in common--we both want to stay healthy and active, and we're both avid information gatherers. I know these things about you because you recently subscribed to my Alternatives newsletter. This tells me that you not only want to take care of yourself, but you want to do it the right way. And you expect results. That's why I'd be willing to bet that you're already taking a multivitamin. That's great, but are you feeling a difference? Are you getting real results? If the answer is no, you may be missing out on some of the most important health benefits of all. Let me explain. Taking a multi-nutrient is one of the most important things you can do for your health, especially if you're over 50. That pivotal age of 50 is when we really start to see and feel the effects of aging. Things begin to take their toll on your body--years of free radical damage; all the normal wear and tear on your bones, tissues, and heart; and physical and emotional stress. On top of all that, it becomes more and more difficult for our bodies to absorb and utilize critical nutrients as we age. Being over 50 myself, I take all of this very seriously. That's why I decided to do some in-depth research into today's popular multivitamins, especially the ones targeted to those of us over 50. What I found is very disappointing, to say the least. In my opinion, these "once daily, all-in-one" supplements don't come close to providing the much-needed nutrients for healthy, vibrant aging. It seems that these "grocery Store" vitamins include a scattering of nutrients thrown together, most of the time in insignificant amounts, I believe. They are sorely lacking some of nature's best nutrients (more about that later). And what's worse, those "over 50" formulas promise even more targeted support, but are really no different. In my opinion, it's nothing but slick advertising. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIME WHEN YOU REALLY DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR From what I've gathered, most people these ordinary multivitamins for two main reasons: First, there's a general misconception about the government's Recommended Daily Intakes (RDIs), A lot of people think these amounts are all they need, but usually RDIs provide only the barest coverage. The recommendations also assume that everyone gets the necessary nutrition from their diets--and that's virtually impossible to do. And just "one pill"? That's just ridiculous. For one pill to give you everything you need, it would have to be the size of Texas. Well, not quite, but you get my point. Even some of the better quality multivitamins lack the advanced nutrients I believe you need to feel young and healthy now, and for years to come. The second reason these supplements are popular is their low costl These "once-daily" solutions are inexpensive for a reason. If there were ever a case 0f getting what you pay for, this is it. I don't believe these vitamins give you the best ratios, potencies and mineral forms to make any noticeable difference in your health. That's just a waste. I'm also concerned about how much attention is given to the quality of these mass produced formulas. You need to make sure your vitamins come from high-quality raw materials and are manufactured according to the strictest guidelines--otherwise you may be wasting your money. And even more important, you may be missing out on important benefits. When it comes to nutritional supplements, the best quality will always give you the best benefits. This I know for a fact. Here's how the right multi-nutrient can make a world of difference in how you feel When you take the right multi-nutrient, the transformation in your health can be amazing. I know this because I've spent the better part of my life traveling the globe, studying the healthiest people in the world and searching for the best health solutions. What I discovered over time was a combination of 68 nature-based nutrients that address every major function of your body. In specific ratios, potencies, and amounts, this combination works hard to make you feel a difference from head to toe. Start taking it and right away you'll notice a boost in your energy level, mood, ability to think, and overall sense of wellbeing. Plus, you get "silent" benefits, which continue to build over time - stronger bones, optimum heart health, and an enhanced immune system. A good multi-nutrient should do two things for you... The first thing a good multi-nutrient should do is give your body what it needs to feel good now. And second, it should help protect it from the wear and tear of aging. It's a downright shame that most "all-in-one" supplements don't have the vital nutrients to do these two things. And what they do give you isn't enough. No matter which multi-nutrient you take, make sure it includes the following: You need essential fatty acids to keep your heart and brain young I have yet to find a once-daily multivitamin that includes an essential fatty acids complex(EFA) --you need high quality EFAs especialy Omega -3s and omega 6s. They're absolutely critical for healthy heart and brain function--they also help lubricate your joints. Unfortunately, most people struggle to get the right amount, ratio, and best quality of these "good', fats in their diet. That's why supplementing with omega-rich fish oil is a must, especially as we get older. If you're taking a multivitamin without an EFA complex, you need to add a good one right' away. But please make sure it's been well screened for quality. You need strong antioxidants to fight the leading cause of aging--free radical damage We're bombarded with free radicals every day. They're in the air we breathe and they're the waste byproducts of the food we eat. You've Heard so much about them because they are the root cause of aging. And they know no boundaries. From your skin, to your digestive tract, up to your brain--they're everywhere. The only true way to fight them is with a good antioxidant arsenal. The trick is feeding your body a complete range of these free radical fighters. If you don't, you will see and feel it. I've found those "over 50' multivitamins especially lacking in this area. Here's a checklist of "must-have" antioxidants:
You need green "superfoods" for immune-support Now this is perhaps where nature does its finest work. Superfoods contain antioxidants and phyto-nutrients that have been traditionally used to support your energy and vitality. And, I've spent a great deal of time over the years tracking down the best of the bunch(often from rare, little known sources). I've been taking superfoods for years.
It amazes me that any "50 Plus" daily vitamin could call itself complete without these superfoods, and'yet that's exactly what they do. Please don't get sidetracked by their "all-in-one" claims, especially when they're missing this important group of nutrients. The right B vitamins for increased energy and stamina One of the most noticeable things that happens as we age is a decrease in energy. Vitamin B12 goes a long way in restoring your "get up and go." I recommend 100 mcg of B12 daily and a full range of B vitamins --you'll feel more energized and mentally alert in no time. The B vitamin family supports your adrenal glands, where hormones are produced--specifically stress hormones. When you become rundown, irritable, and tired, it's a sign that the B vitamins in your adrenal glands are running low and your body's tolerance for stress is lessened. So if you're taking one of those grocery store multivitamins and not feeling any difference in your energy level, check the levels of B12. Some of the formulas I looked into have as little as 25 mcg of B12 and hardly any of the other important B vitamins. DON'T TAKE CHANCES WITH YOUR MULTIVITAMIN - QUALITY COUNTS As I mentioned earlier, most of today's grocery store multivitamins are pretty cheap. While those "over 50' types seem like a downright bargain, don't be fooled. You may be wasting your money on unnecessary fillers. And your health is the last place you should ever skimp. In fact, this is the one area where you should seek out the very best for yourself. That's why all of the supplement formulas I recommend have been rigorously tested at every stage for purity, potency and freshness--from the raw materials to the final encapsulation of ingredients. And they also undergo independent laboratory testing as a triple quality check. That's how important I believe quality is when it comes to taking supplements. I hope this research helps you make clear, informed decisions about your multi-nutrient I know you work hard to keep yourself healthy and active, and I want to do all I can to help you. I hope I've given you something to think about. If you arm yourself with the right information, you'll always make well-informed, smart choices when it comes to your health. And the right multi-nutrient is one of the decisions can make. It sets the foundation for your health now and for so many years ahead. The wrong one will do nothing but waste your money, while the right one can bring about terrific changes in your life. |
